It’s never easy recovering from a traumatic rescue attempt and a sad ending. But, as ARCH President Jill Newman-Rogers says “You grieve for the ones you cannot save and then you have to move on to the ones you can. If you lose the battle then at least you know you tried and gave them loving care for their last days or, in Marquesa’s case, her last hours.”
But volunteers have been heartened by the hopeful signs in Esmeralda. She has now been with us for a week, and we can see a distinct improvement. She is alert and interested, particularly in food which, of course, is being carefully rationed at the moment while her body readjusts from the effects of starvation. She is a lovely-natured mare, kind and gentle and deserved better than being abandoned to die slowly. She has been assessed by our vet Rocio and is enjoying the attention and love from the volunteers. Hopefully this elderly grey mare will survive to enjoy a better life.
